Abstract

IPv6 is about to be deployed within a very short time. Multihoming solutions must be quickly,but appropriately chosen, in order to come up with a solution which provides good capabilities in terms of TE or failure recovery. The Shim6 mecanism is the multihoming option currently developped by the IETF. This Master’s Thesis gives an overview of the protocol and provides a prototype which is an extension to the Linux Kernel. The prototype is intended to be a functional basis for multihoming support and failure recovery. This basis can be further improved in order to support, eventually, the whole protocol. The thesis also provides clear descriptions of the design choices made in the course of implementation, as well as an introduction to important Kernel concepts relative to the Linux Network Architecture.
